Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) was a British author, known for 28 thrillers and adventure stories, and a screenwriter. His name is widely recognized by readers around the world. MacLean's books have sold over 150 million copies, and 18 films have been made based on his novels, scripts, and plots. In 1983, the University of Glasgow awarded the author an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature.
From 1941 to 1946, MacLean served in the navy, participating in military operations and polar convoys, which provided him with rich material for his works and defined the themes of his best books.
