This book is the result of more than twenty years of research by the author. He began gathering information about the Totsk atomic exercises of 1954 in bits and pieces back in the late 1980s, but only with the lifting of censorship in the USSR did it become possible to publish articles about this great mystery of the Orenburg region and the country. Newspaper and magazine publications, thoroughly revised and supplemented, made up this book, the first edition of which was published in 2011. It is based on the testimonies of participants in the military exercises on September 14, 1954, and peaceful residents of Orenburg who became witnesses, and even victims, of the atomic explosion. Separate chapters under the general title "Resistance of Materials" discuss how difficult it was to get to the truth.
This book is about the responsibility of scientists, the military, and the authorities—everyone who conducted the Totsk experiment—before the people, before Russia, before history.
