Once in May

Olenka Golitsyna is a fourteen-year-old princess. Her beloved Lieutenant Minenkov dies. She is expecting a child, but the pain of loss compels her to refuse the girl. Meanwhile, in the Pskov province, Varvara Bradford, the wife of a priest, dreams of having children. In moments of despair, she learns about the abandoned girl and takes her home to raise her in love. Years have passed, and by chance at a ball, she meets an unfamiliar woman, Floriana, who looks very much like her daughter. Varvara's quiet life comes to an end.
