Ion Tikhiy, weary from his travels, heads to pastoral Switzerland, expecting to enjoy idleness among bucolic views. Invited by a casual acquaintance on a tour of the Institute of Historical Machines, he receives a chronogram – a strange summons from... the future. The governments of two rival states from the planet Entzia demand in an ultimatum that Ion arrive to dispel the falsehoods described in the 14th chapter of his "Diaries" – about Kurds, sepulchering, and the like. In case of refusal, they threaten terrifying consequences for both Ion and the entire Earth.
