3326 year. Nigel Sheldon, one of the founders of the Commonwealth, is visited by a representative of the Raelians - a race that has appointed itself as the guardians of the Abyss, a mysterious formation in the core of the... Galaxy that threatens the existence of all living things. The Raelians persuade Nigel to participate in a desperate attempt to break through to the Abyss.
Once inside, Nigel discovers that humans are not the only form of life drawn into the Abyss, where the laws of physics are somewhat different, and mental abilities indistinguishable from magic are commonplace. The humans trapped there are battling an alien species of biological mimics. Although the Padanes possess intelligence, they act as ruthless killers.
However, it is these outsiders who may hold the key to the complete elimination of the threat of the Abyss - if only Nigel can unravel their secret. While the Padanes continue to attack humans mercilessly, and the vulnerable human society splits into different factions in a civil war, Nigel must uncover the secrets of the Padanes - before he is killed by the very people he has come to save.
