The Boy

"The Boy" is one of the early novellas by the famous Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki, which brought him popularity and made his name known in the literary circles of Japan. A maximalist youth, whose personality is still forming, looks at... the adult world, living by its own laws. Due to his age and character, the boy is straightforward and open to new experiences; however, those around him and the adults see him as shortsighted and sometimes foolish. The hero lives in a difficult time: the Meiji era – a period of rapid change, when new views and ideas emerge, and against this backdrop, the young man must determine for himself what is right and what is not, and which ideals are worth following.
