Lucy Snow is a young orphan who has neither money nor family. However, she has an excellent education, a strong character and an adventurous enough mind to go alone to the continent and find a lucrative position as an English teacher in a respectable boarding school for young girls. It was there, amidst hard everyday work and petty female intrigues, that fate brings her together with two very different men - the Englishman John and the Belgian Paul.
