Kunikida Doppo was born in 1871 and died of tuberculosis in 1908, living only 36 years. A short life was the fate of many of his contemporaries and fellow writers. Kunikida Doppo lived a brief but intense life: a poor,... hungry youth, working for newspapers, from which he was fired for his unmanageable personality and sharp judgments. He was married twice, was baptized, and participated in the Sino-Japanese War as a war correspondent, after which he became a staunch pacifist. He was constantly in search and boldly changed his literary preferences, passing from an interest in romanticism to strict realism. Kunikida Doppo managed to write little, but all his works entered the annals of modern Japanese classics, and many of them are studied in schools. This collection includes the best stories of the writer.
