The story of a Kazakh clan over the course of a century. Dekulakization, war, the perestroika of the nineties, personal losses, and small victories — through the eyes of three generations of women.
The eldest of them, Akbalzhan, was married off... at the age of sixteen to save her from hunger. What drove her to flee into the unknown with two small children? Will she find love and happiness? Will she be able to preserve herself, her native language, her mother's tales and songs in a foreign land, and pass them down to her daughters? And what force, sixty years later, will draw her granddaughter back to her ancestors' homeland?
