pursuits, politics, and religion; however, his name has endured through the ages thanks to poetry, primarily the poem "Paradise Lost," first published in 1667. This epic drama, comparable in scale to the works of Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare, became one of the greatest masterpieces of English literature. In this edition, "Paradise Lost" is presented in the translation by Arkady Steinberg and is accompanied by a complete set of classical illustrations by Gustave Doré.
The book also includes the poem "Paradise Regained," based on an episode from the New Testament about the temptation of Christ by Satan, the tragedy "Samson Agonistes," and the best examples of Milton's lyrics. In addition to Doré's illustrations, the edition includes illustrations by William Harvey, George Wharton Edwards, and Arthur Rackham (colored engravings for the exquisite pastoral "Comus"), previously unpublished in Russia. The texts are accompanied by detailed notes from the outstanding literary scholar, expert in foreign literature, Andrey Nikolayevich Gorbunov.
