The Man Without Properties

Robert Musil (1880-1942) was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. After graduating from the cadet school, he entered the Higher Technical School in Stuttgart, then studied philosophy, psychology, and mathematics at the University of Berlin. Since 1924, Musil almost continuously, until the end of his life, worked on the greatest novel of the twentieth century - "The Man Without Properties." Musil's mastery, combining phenomenal erudition, exceptional analytical abilities, and a rare writing gift, remains unmatched.
The main character of the novel, Ulrich, faced with "the incredible loneliness of a person in a desert of trivialities," tries to isolate himself from the brilliance and poverty of the external world through his Self. The tale of his life can be read as a meticulous exploration of the modern human soul, which has not lost the ability to dream and to endow the world with an indefinite but significant purpose. Like another great book, Joyce's "Ulysses," "The Man Without Properties" remains a challenge from the Writer to the Reader, to which every connoisseur of true Literature must respond.
