Under Local Anesthesia

The main character, a teacher of German language and history, Eberhard Shtarush, faces a whole series of dental operations, and the doctors of the local clinic believe that watching television distracts patients from pain, so Shtarush spends long hours watching... TV shows. Reflections on the past blend in Shtarush's mind with information about the current situation in the country, the life of a whole generation passes before his eyes… The 20th century. A century of troubles, bloodshed, complicity and indifference, doubts and painful experiences — this is what Shtarush constantly thinks about, asking himself again and again: can society, like a diligent student, learn from its mistakes?
