This collection includes works by Bulgakov that are autobiographical in nature. "Notes on Cuffs" – a witty, ironic novella dedicated to wanderings in the post-revolutionary Caucasus, complicated relationships with the "red" authorities and fellow writers, dreams of emigration, and first experiences in literature. "Notes of a Young Doctor" — almost documentary essays by Bulgakov about the holy and terrifying fate of a servant of Hippocrates in the impoverished, almost medieval Russian province of the early 1920s. "Morphine" — a disturbingly candid, tormenting confession that served as the basis for the film of the same name by Alexei Balabanov.
