Hugo did not hide that the main character of his novel is the cathedral itself. Under its gothic vaults unfolds one of the greatest dramas in world literature — a love triangle burdened by the influence of relentless fate on human destiny. The proud gypsy Esmeralda, the kind ugly bell-ringer Quasimodo, the beautiful heartless Phoebus, and the evil, jealousy-tormented priest Frollo are the broken heroes of the tragedy known to the whole world.
