«The Hunchback of Notre-Dame» — a famous historical novel by Victor Hugo, published in March 1831. The success of the book drew public attention to the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which at that time was about to be demolished or rebuilt, and allowed it to be preserved intact. Hugo did not hide that the main character of his novel is the cathedral itself. Under its gothic vaults unfolds one of the greatest dramas in world literature — a love triangle burdened by the influence of relentless fate on human destiny. The proud gypsy Esmeralda, the kind ugly bell-ringer Quasimodo, the beautiful heartless Phoebus, and the evil, jealousy-tormented priest Frollo are the broken heroes of the tragedy known to the whole world.
