René Remond (1918-2007) – an outstanding French historian, author of more than 50 books on political, intellectual, and religious history of France and Europe, a member of the French Academy and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. The book «Religion and Society in Europe. The Process of Secularization in the 19th and 20th Centuries (1798-2000)», as its title suggests, is dedicated to the role and place of religion in society – a crucial factor in European history: few issues have occupied such a prominent place in ideological and political confrontations.
