The classic of domestic science fiction, Vladimir Mikhailov, started his literary career as a poet. And there is only one step from poetry to science fiction - there are plenty of examples. His first foray into science fiction, the novella... “A Special Necessity,” came at a fortunate time. The flight of Gagarin, “Well, let’s go!” the approach of space to humanity, the enthusiastic crowds in the streets… Science fiction suddenly transformed from yesterday’s literary Cinderella into a fairy-tale Firebird, and sci-fi writers stepped out from the narrow confines of “second-rate literature” onto the wide highway. A whole constellation of remarkable masters from Efremov and the Strugatsky brothers to Hansovsky, Savchenko, Gurevich, Larionova, and Bulychev (the list could go on) enriched the science fiction genre. And one of the most notable stars in this constellation was Vladimir Mikhailov. The cycle about Captain Uldemir belongs to the best works of the writer. In the first book of the cycle, “The Watchman for My Brother,” the author presents the heroes (and the readers) with a problem of choice. The supernova flare that threatens Earth with total destruction of humanity can potentially be nullified by extinguishing the explosive wave with advanced technologies of the future. However, in the vicinity of the star, there is the planet Dal, populated by descendants of Earth. The chances for a successful evacuation of its population are extremely slim, and in the event of a failed attempt, both Earth and Dal would burn in flames. Earthlings face a difficult choice: to abandon their blood brothers to fate in order to save Earth, or to take the risk, endangering their home planet. And if the latter is chosen, who will take such unprecedented risk? The choice fell on people from the past - Captain Uldemir and the crew of his starship… “Then come, and we will decide” - is a direct continuation of “The Watchman.” This time, Captain Uldemir faces the task of stopping the madmen living on neighboring planets, preventing them from destroying each other in nuclear fire. The plot of “The Lord,” which continues the cycle about Captain Uldemir, is also based on war. But this war is nothing like those that intelligent and unintelligent inhabitants of the Universe have fought since ancient times. The ruler of the planet Assart’s claims do not extend to adjacent territories. He needs someone else’s story to reshape it to his liking, becoming the master of time.
