This collection includes works by Bulgakov that are autobiographical in nature — a witty, ironic story "Notes on Cuffs" dedicated to the wanderings in the post-revolutionary Caucasus, complex relationships with the "red" authorities and fellow writers, dreams of emigration and first experiences in literature, and the stunning "Notes of a Young Doctor" — almost documentary essays by Bulgakov about the holy and terrifying fate of a servant of Hippocrates in the impoverished, almost medieval Russian provinces of the early 1920s. The book also includes "Morphine" — a frighteningly candid, painful confession that served as the basis for the eponymous film by Alexei Balabanov.
