Watching Others Suffer (2003) is one of the last books by Susan Sontag published during her lifetime. In it, the critic turns to his acclaimed work “On Photography” (1977), adding, almost thirty years later, a kind of afterword to reflections on the nature of the photographic image. This time the focus is on war photography, documentary and staged photographs of other people's suffering, their meaning and purpose.
