Husband and wife

The name of the English writer Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) is rightfully inextricably linked with his famous novel “The Moonstone,” where he actually became one of the founders of the detective genre, inventing plot devices that would later become traditional for detective novels. In the shadow of this high-profile achievement, another incarnation of Collins remained - a friend of Charles Dickens and a wonderful novelist and writer of everyday life. Husband and Wife, Collins's ninth novel, was published in 1870. Not only an excellent writer, but also a lawyer by training, describing the intricacies of the relationships between Anna Sylvester, Blanche Lundy, Geoffrey Delamaine and Arnold Brinkworth, Wilkie Collins creates a ruthless description of his era, where, upon entering into a marriage, the spouse finds herself hostage to the norms imposed by the law.
