By the order of the Church of the Holy Seraphims, a quartet of its gifted students, the gems, begins their service in the imperial investigation. They are to investigate crimes of particular importance - those behind which stand mystics and other heretics. But the very first case proves to be not as simple as everyone insists, and it is connected by a thread that leads to a tangle of intrigues and secrets of this world.
