Woe from Wit. The Minor

“Woe from Wit” is a masterpiece of Russian literature, a work dissected into quotes and catchphrases from almost the first to the last word. “If only I could gather all the books and burn them,” “Bring me a carriage, a... carriage,” “To the village, to auntie, to the backwoods, to Saratov,” “She to him – and he to me”... We use phrases from “Woe from Wit” so often that we don’t even realize they are quotes. Isn’t it because the bitter, caustic, and brilliant comedy of Griboedov remains relevant and still doesn’t leave the best theater stages of our country to this day? “The Minor” and “The Brigade,” comedies written in the distant “golden century of Catherine,” are the true indicators of the author’s talent – they do not lose their relevance even today. After all, the types portrayed in them – wealthy sons, ignoramuses, boors, and tyrants – are still encountered by us today, and the legendary “I do not want to study – I want to marry” or “Live for a century – learn for a century” is known by everyone.
