Assistant District Attorney Rusty Sabich has made a successful career, but his personal life has not worked out. Tired of strained relations with his wife, he begins a brief affair with a colleague - young and ambitious assistant Caroline. The... situation changes dramatically when Caroline is unexpectedly murdered. Taking on the investigation of her death, Rusty tries to complicate the case. However, when their affair stops being a secret, Sabich goes from investigator to prime suspect and finds himself in the defendant's chair. Trying to prove his innocence, Rusty seeks help from the capable lawyer Sandy Stern, who can work miracles, with whom he has faced off in court several times. In 1990, the novel was adapted into a film of the same name starring Harrison Ford and Raul Julia in the leading roles.
