Nanny from Moscow

Ivan Sergeevich Shmelov (1873-1950) — a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize; dubbed the "Orthodox litterateur" for his numerous texts on the spirituality of the Russian people. While in emigration, "not for a moment in his... spiritual fervor does he cease to think of Russia and suffer from its misfortunes".
The novel "Nanny from Moscow", written from the perspective of an elderly Russian woman, tells about the anxious pre-revolutionary times.

The main character, Darya Stepanovna, accompanies her ward, Ekaterina, during their escape from the Bolshevik power to Crimea, and then through numerous relocations from country to country, to India, to the USA, to Europe. Only unwavering faith gives the deeply believing woman the strength to overcome all the hardships of life in emigration and not to deviate from the path of virtue.
