Notes of a Doctor

Veresaev's literary debut. An autobiographical book, which first saw the light in 1901 – and immediately brought wide fame to the young author. The first steps of the freshly baked doctor, starting his journey in the medical field. Successes and failures. The torturous fear of making a mistake that could doom an innocent patient. Stress. Despair. Pride in achievements. Dangerous and morally questionable, yet necessary experiments on people, in search of new treatment methods. Sensation and scandal – the emergence of female doctors. Russia's eternal problem – the passion for self-treatment and "treatment," as it would be said now, "alternative" methods. What is this life of a young, novice doctor really like? A feat – or a martyr's cross? Veresaev repeatedly asks himself this question – and cannot find an answer.
