The brilliant literary gift of Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak (1887–1964) manifested in many areas of creativity: he gained fame as an author of children's books, an outstanding poet, critic, and playwright. He devoted his entire life, from early youth, to the... art of translation, “high and difficult.” Thanks to Marshak's talent, the Scottish poet Robert Burns gained incredible popularity in Russia, and the voices of William Blake, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edward Lear, John Keats, and other remarkable poets were heard. Marshak said, “The best examples of translations from the Russian school convey not only the soul but also the form of the poems, a form that is their flesh...” — and these words fully characterize his own work in this field.
