The Pushkin era – «a quarter of a century», counted by Pushkin himself from the date of the founding of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum (1811), the 1810s–1830s – is known as the «golden age» of Russian poetry. It received its... name not for the sake of rhetoric: it was precisely the «golden age» that was referred to in antiquity as a bygone epoch of beauty, goodness, and justice, an era of lost paradise. And indeed, the art of the nineteenth century encompassed the most beautiful, powerful, and unique features of Russian culture. This era can be called the paradise of the Russian soul, lost but once again found in the poems of the poets of the Pushkin era.
