The poem Dead Souls was translated into many other languages even during the author's lifetime. It had tremendous success. No one before or after Gogol was able to describe so vividly and sharply the vices and weaknesses of the Russian... person, to so vividly and truthfully reflect the most important problems for Russia. One hundred eighty years have passed, and the poem sounds as if it was just written.
