Permafrost

The books of Viktor Remizov have been noted by readers and literary critics, appearing in the shortlists of the main Russian literary awards - "Russian Booker" and «Big Book», and translated into the major European languages. In «Permafrost», the author... again, as in the two previous books, turns to Siberia. The novel is based on real events. One and a half thousand kilometers of railway were laid by prisoners from the northern Urals to the lower reaches of the Yenisei through taiga and swamps. The «Great Stalinist Highway» proved unnecessary as soon as its ideological inspirer died, but over four years, enormous resources were thrown into its construction, the most valuable of which became human lives and fates. The novel is structured as the story of several families. It is about love, the power and beauty of man, the formation of a personality at a turning point in history, about the confrontation and coexistence of man and nature. The unhurried, attentive narrative captivates and does not let the reader go until the last phrase and for a long time after.
The novel «Permafrost» was awarded the «Big Book» prize (2021) and the «Book of the Year» prize (2021).
