In the summer, the town of Tommerup on the island of Funen is filled with serenity and calm. Charlotte, a young mother of two small children, disappears without a trace on her way to work after her morning fitness session,... even though it is just a short distance from the fitness center to the school where she teaches. Later that day, Charlotte's desperate husband goes to the police station in Odense, where Deputy Chief of Police Liam Stark and Commissioner Deya Thorp take his statement, but they are not allowed to start a search because the woman has been missing for less than twenty-four hours. However, Charlotte does not appear after a day, and it becomes clear that a crime has been committed. An investigation begins, with more and more new circumstances emerging in the case, the police are working almost everywhere in Funen, and people are afraid to leave their homes for fear of becoming the next victim. Liam and Deya find themselves in a brutal race against time, caught up in a game that leads to the agonizing deaths of people whom the police cannot help in any way.
