The Russian writer and philosopher Fyodor Dostoevsky explored human nature and societal moods prevailing in Russian society in the 19th century in his works. "Poor People" is his debut novel, which he worked on for nine months. The story is presented in the format of correspondence between a cousin brother and sister – Makary Devushkin and Varvara Dobroselova, who are forced to seek ways to improve their financial situation. The tragicomedy exposes the realities of life for the lower class in Petersburg, cast aside by society and forced to lead a miserable existence.
