Thirty-year-old worker Voshchev is fired from the factory due to the «growth of weakness in him and thoughtfulness». Seeking to understand the truth and learn the structure of the world, he ends up in a neighboring city at the construction site of the «general proletarian house», which is to become the beginning of the city of the «happy future».
