Persuasion

The plot of the novel is simple – the meeting of Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth in their youth, love, a breakup, and a new meeting years later, as mature people who have experienced much and gained understanding. However, at... the same time, "Persuasion" represents a stunningly humorous and subtly ironic "encyclopedia of manners" of the provincial English "society" in the early 19th century. Young ladies chasing after wealthy suitors and fortune hunters, mothers and aunts desperately scheming to find advantageous matches for the girls, vain and pretentious local "lionesses," ruined gentry, gossip and rumors – before the reader, colorful portraits and sharp, amusing situations literally come to life.
