The Gambler in English

We present to you a translated edition of one of the most famous novels by the Russian writer F. M. Dostoevsky. The central themes of the work became an all-consuming passion for gambling and the writer's relevant problem of the relationship between Russia and Europe. The plot is based on the painful relationship between the general's stepdaughter Polina and a young teacher Alexei, for whom the game transforms from a means of self-assertion into «the terrible pleasure of luck, victory, power».
