Mary Ann Evans, writing under the pseudonym George Eliot, the author of the famous books «Middlemarch» and «The Mill on the Floss», entered into the history of English literature as an outstanding master of the late Victorian novel, a forerunner... of the new psychological prose of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Her authority in the field of literature among her contemporaries was indisputable; they regarded her as a teacher of life and called her Sibyl. Queen Victoria herself was a fervent admirer of her talent, and her fame and contemporary success are comparable throughout the 19th century only to the achievements of Charles Dickens. The largely autobiographical novel «The Mill on the Floss», included in this edition, is one of the best coming-of-age novels in English literature. It tells the story of the life and love of Maggie Tulliver, the most charming of all the characters created by the writer.
