Mary Ann Evans, writing under the pseudonym George Eliot, the author of the famous books «Middlemarch» and «The Mill on the Floss», entered the history of English literature as an outstanding master of the late Victorian novel and a herald... of a new psychological prose at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Her authority in the literary sphere among her contemporaries was indisputable; she was regarded as a teacher of life and called a Sibyl, and Queen Victoria herself was an ardent admirer of her talent, with her glory and success during her lifetime comparable in the whole 19th century only to the achievements of Charles Dickens. The largely autobiographical novel «The Mill on the Floss», included in this edition, is one of the best coming-of-age novels in English literature. It tells the story of the life and love of Maggie Tulliver, the most charming of all the heroines created by the author.
