Two suns shine over the planet Taldaine, one side of the planet – the Dark side – is always submerged in shadow, while the other – the Clear side – is a sand desert drenched in relentless light. The sand on Taldaine has magical properties, and masters are trained in the manipulation of sand magic. Kenton is one of the masters, striving to achieve the highest rank in the hierarchy of sand mages – mastrella. To do this, he is willing to work hard on himself, but the young man lacks talent. Everything changes with the attack of a hostile clan: Kenton's father and friends are killed, and he himself becomes a mastrella. He faces difficult tasks – to unite the few remaining sand masters, withstand political strife, and find those responsible and complicit in the massacre that claimed his father's life. Intrigues are woven against the fiercely dedicated Kenton, hired assassins hunt him down, and enemies and traitors are closer than he can imagine. To endure and uncover his true abilities, Kenton may be aided by a duchess from the Dark side of the planet, who clearly has her own interest in what is happening on the Clear side.
