The plot of the novel is built on the fierce rivalry of two outstanding illusionists in the second half of the 19th century.
 
The enmity, which originated in early youth, turns their lives into an endless competition. Over the years, the... desire to achieve a decisive crushing victory over the opponent becomes unbearable, and the struggle reaches a point where any means are justified, including stealing each other's secrets, giving hints to the audience during performances, and openly sabotaging shows. Yet each remains a virtuoso in their craft and continuously perfects their skills, inventing ever more intricate tricks. And now both are successful, wealthy, and have reached unprecedented heights in the art of illusion. Heights that cross the boundary of reality.
