Gerald Durrell (1925–1995) — a famous English zoologist and traveler, one of the iconic figures of the 20th century. Durrell's books have long been part of the gold fund of world literature and are very popular with readers around the...
world.
The works included in this book (“Three Tickets to Adventure”, “Under the Canopy of the Drunken Forest”) tell about Durrell's travels in South America. There, the great animal collector and his team were engaged in the search for rare animals and birds. According to Durrell, there is a mistaken belief that capturing animals is the most difficult part of a collector's profession. But in reality, the real work begins when the animal is already caught. Providing the animals with proper nutrition, and most importantly, delivering them to the zoo — is often a very challenging task. However, Durrell never hid the fact that for the love of his work — sometimes dangerous and troublesome, but never boring — he was willing to take risks and endure all sorts of inconveniences.
In his writings about his impressions of South America, its fantastic nature, encounters with new animals, their behavior, and the amusing and sometimes very touching communication with them, the author writes with unwavering love, impeccable accuracy, and inimitable humor.
The edition contains illustrations by the famous British artist Ralph Thompson.
