The book by anthropologist and science journalist Artyom Kosmarsky consists of a series of essays based on the materials of recent studies published by authoritative historical publications. Life and death in Nazi Germany and the occupied territories are examined by... the author through the lens of microhistories – vivid local narratives. The selected topics are new and unusual for the Russian reader: Aryan football, boxing in concentration camps, the economy of occupied Ukraine, disputes among Nazi magicians and intellectuals... However, through such specific and expressive examples, the author was able to clearly demonstrate how the power system of the Third Reich operated, how officials and military personnel thought and acted, and finally, how ordinary people interacted with the authorities and maneuvered out of difficult situations.
