Edgar Rice Burroughs rightfully considered the founder of adventure fiction: the path for the new genre in literature was paved by the popular novels about John Carter and Tarzan, published in the 1910s (the first translations were made in the... 1920s). Burroughs' books sold hundreds of millions of copies, and 60 films have been made based on his novels. His work inspired such genre masters as Ray Bradbury, Philip Jose Farmer, Otis Klein, not to mention countless epigones; Burroughs' literary fame and commercial success were staggering. Thanks to the inexhaustible imagination of the writer, a beloved planetary novel emerged, as well as such a subgenre as "sword and planet." The famous Martian trilogy by Burroughs is dedicated to the incredible adventures on the Red Planet. John Carter, a cavalry officer from Virginia, is magically transported to Mars, where there is a constant struggle between various races. Thanks to his courage, determination, and resourcefulness, Carter manages not only to survive but also to gain a high position in the Martian society, torn apart by intrigues. His main reward becomes the love of the beautiful princess of Helium, whom he frees from slavery. His feats in battles against warlike tribes, aerial pirates, and other forces of Martian evil made John Carter the most popular long-lived character in science fiction literature.
