This edition is a translation of excerpts from the work of the Arabic-speaking Persian historian Abu Ali Ahmed ibn Omar ibn Dasta (Ibn Rustah) (late 9th - early 10th centuries) "Kitab al-Alak an-Nafisa" ("The Book of Precious Necklaces"), which provides a description of the Khazars, Burtas, Bulgarians, Magyars, Slavs, and Rus. The translation into Russian was done by the Russian orientalist, historian, and linguist, corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in the field of Eastern languages, Daniil Avraamovich Khvolson (1819-1911).
