The first collection of stories in the history of European literature, united by the theme, in the author's own words, of the paralysis of personality and the death of the soul in the conservative and backward Irish capital of the early 20th century. In it, the work and home life, the everyday and the holidays of the inhabitants of Dublin— a grim city behind whose brick facades murders and suicides of human souls occur daily and routinely.
