In the early 3rd century BC, the Alexandrian Museion was built in the city - a religious, research, educational, and cultural center of Hellenism; the temple of the Muses. The Museion included the extensive Alexandrian library, created during the same period. Scholars accepted into the staff of the Museion engaged in natural philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, geography, medicine, music theory, linguistics, and other sciences.
