The novel «My Cousin Rachel», according to many critics and fans of the English writer Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989), is on par with the acclaimed «Rebecca», and in some ways even surpasses it. The detective intrigue is combined with an unusual love drama that unfolds against the mesmerizing landscapes of Cornwall and picturesque scenes of mid-19th century Italy. The main character — the mysterious, unfathomable Rachel — is one of the most memorable figures in English literature. With every twist of the plot, the reader becomes increasingly lost in speculation about who is before them — a victim of unjust suspicions or a calculating intriguer and murderer… The novel was published in 1951 and immediately became a bestseller, and just a year later, a film adaptation starring Olivia de Havilland and a young Richard Burton was released, followed by a television series based on the novel.
