For most of our contemporaries, the names of Odin, Loki, Thor, and other Scandinavian gods are known mainly through films and comics, rather than their literary basis – the epic The Elder Edda. A vivid, fantastical world where Valkyries dwell, dragons guard treasures, and the gods of Asgard intervene in the fates of people. The Elder Edda is one of the most important monuments of Western European literature, a unique collection of mythological and heroic songs. It narrates the Viking age, when Scandinavian nationalities and states were formed, and legends and myths emerged. In this edition, The Elder Edda is published in the full classic translation by A.
