The hero of this novel is a "hero of our time," a man who has gone through a harsh school of life, who after long wandering returns home and finds himself alone with a cruel and unpredictable reality in a... new country, so unlike the old one. What is now his Homeland? The writer answers this question, portraying Russia in the 1990s without embellishments, where natural selection occurs, alas, not always according to Darwin, for very often it is not the strongest who survives, but the most despicable. Through the example of many fates, the threads of which unexpectedly and bizarrely intertwine in a romance, the author provides a snapshot of society at the intersection of times, in an era of reforms and upheavals. The writer shows the struggle of a person for faith, paints a broad historical canvas where two forces collide: clans that seek power by any means necessary, and decent people striving to find their way in this life without transgressing the laws of goodness and justice. This novel has been dubbed by critics as the encyclopedia of Russian life in the first half of the 1990s of the 20th century. Among other awards, the novel was honored with the Association of Publishers' award for "Best Bestseller" of 2004, as well as the "Literary Newspaper" and the Russian State Library award for the best book of the year in the nomination "Thriller Prose" in 2005, and in 2006 it was published in Paris in French. Based on this work, an eight-part feature film was made for Russian television.
