The Cossack Captive. Cossacks. Hadji Murat

This edition publishes the so-called Caucasian works of L. N. Tolstoy: short stories "The Raid", "Cutting Wood", "The Cossack Captive" and novellas "Cossacks" and "Hadji Murat". They reflect the author's impressions from his three-year service in the Caucasus. In 1851,... he went there to join his older brother Nikolai, an officer in the active army, and lived in a Cossack stanitsa on the banks of the Terek for almost three years. The novella "Cossacks" is rightly considered the main work of L. N. Tolstoy of the 1850s, which he worked on, with interruptions, for 10 years (1853-1863).
He created the novella "Hadji Murat" in the last period of his life, but its creative history dates back to the 1850s: looking back, sifting through memories and rereading old diaries, Tolstoy blesses this difficult and remarkable time - of great trials and great revelations.
