David Herbert Lawrence remains one of the important writers in his homeland, England, and perhaps in all of Europe. The main part of his extensive heritage consists of novels. The best of them — «Lady Chatterley's Lover», «Women in Love»,... «Sons and Lovers» — have become classics of twentieth-century English literature. However, it was «Lady Chatterley's Lover» that brought Lawrence the greatest success and the most bitter disappointment. The intensity of passion and the vividness of the love scenes were perceived as a challenge to society. Immediately after its publication in 1928, it was banned, and the finished print run was confiscated and destroyed. Only in 1960, after a sensational trial that shook all of England, was the novel rehabilitated and it remains one of the most beloved and widely read works to this day.
