The fate of the book, despite its undeniable success, was not easy. The novel was rejected by four publishers, as it strayed too sharply from the usual canons. And having already been accepted for printing, it underwent harsh, sometimes pointless vivisection: numerous, often unfounded cuts, endless nitpicking from publishers, arbitrary editorial inserts made without the author's knowledge, — and as a result of all this, there were glitches and inconsistencies in the plot... The complete, restored version of the star epic by Sergei Snegov, which is offered in this book, was published only in 2010, 16 years after the writer's death.
