The novel is based on real events from 1896, when a group of Swedish pilgrims left the country and established a new settlement in Jerusalem. In 1899, Selma Lagerlöf traveled to the Jerusalem colony to see how her compatriots lived.... She also visited them in their homeland and met with their relatives and friends who remained in Sweden. Following her journey, Lagerlöf wrote a novel that significantly contributed to her being awarded the Nobel Prize.
